Ohio employers receive $1.5 million in workplace safety grants

COLUMBUS – Seventy-three Ohio employers will share $1,521,059 in grants from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation to purchase equipment designed to substantially reduce or eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses. “Workers are employers’ most important asset, and preventing accidents can keep them healthy and productive,” said BWC Administrator/CEO Sarah Morrison. “Employers investing in safety should consider applying for a safety grant and making use of the many BWC services that can help reduce claims and lower costs.” BWC approved the Safety Intervention Grants during the first quarter of 2018. Local recipients include:

Ottawa County

MarineMax East Inc.: $15,667.43 to purchase one 32-foot scissor lift to reduce the risk of injury to fingers, hands, wrist, arms, shoulder, neck, back and legs related to hand force, awkward postures, contact stress, and manual materials handling. This intervention will improve the maintenance and repair of large boats. MarineMax East Inc. is a boat retailer.

Wild Wings Inc.: $10,920 to purchase a guide rail system to reduce the risk of injury to fingers, hands, wrist, arms, shoulder, neck, back, and legs related to hand force, awkward postures, contact stress, push/ pull moderate to heavy load, manual materials handling, and confined space. The intervention will improve the maintenance process. Wild Wings Inc. is a dock marina, campground site, manufactured home park, convenience store and restaurant lounge that provide these services for the tourist industry.

Sandusky County

JVS Garage Door Company Inc.: $15,018.13 to purchase one scissor lift to reduce the risk of injury to hands, wrist, arms, shoulder, neck, back and legs related to hand force, awkward postures, contact stress, push/pull moderate load, and manual materials handling. This intervention will improve the installation and maintenance processes of overhead doors. JVS Garage Door Company Inc. is an overhead door contractor.

Ludlow Composites Corp.: $6,494.63 to purchase three hydraulic lift carts to reduce the risk of injury to fingers, hands, wrists, neck, back, and legs related to repetitive motion, hand force, awkward postures, and push/pull moderate load. The intervention will improve the materials handling process. Ludlow Composites Corp. is a manufacturer of various PVC and latex foam solutions.

Seneca County

Dundore Plumbing Heating & Cooling LTD: $23,051.60 to purchase one driveable vertical mast lift, one narrow-base scissor lift and one 26-foot scissors lift to reduce the risk of injury to fingers, hands, arms, shoulder, neck, back and legs related to hand force, awkward postures, contact stress and manual materials handling. This intervention will improve installation and repair processes. Dundore Plumbing Heating & Cooling LTD specialize in the installation of commercial plumbing and HVAC systems.

The Safety Intervention Grant program matches an employer’s investment 3-to-1 up to a maximum of $40,000. Quarterly data reports and follow-up case studies measure the effectiveness of employers’ safety interventions and establish best practices for accident and injury prevention.
