Sandusky County Habitat for Humanity is celebrating its 30th year in 2019. It was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1989 with 13 individuals serving on the Board of Trustees and with 11 sponsoring churches. The affiliate existed as an all-volunteer organization until 2004 when the Board approved the hiring of a part-time executive director. In November of 2005, the current director was hired and remains in the position today.

The affiliate has served 26 families in Sandusky County with new and/or rehab homes. A rehab for a 27th family is nearing completion according to Donna Thatcher, executive director. In addition to the local families, we have served 28.9 international families through the tithe donations to Habitat International. The tithe donations support the global vision of “a world where everyone has a decent place to live.”

The 30th Anniversary is being celebrated in various ways. Students from Vanguard Sentinel built a playhouse for Habitat which is being offered in a fundraiser. It has been on display in downtown Fremont since June and the winning ticket will be drawn at noon Aug. 3 at the All Together Fremont event held that day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown Fremont. In honor of Vanguard’s 50th and our 30th, this project was a great cooperative effort with the Building Trades students. Habitat has had a display in the showcase at Croghan Colonial Bank downtown during the month of July and in August will have a display at the Sandusky County Fair in the Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Tent. A final celebration will take place on Oct. 17 at Hayes Memorial Unite d Methodist Church with a dessert buffet. Ryan Miller, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Ohio will be present. Guests are welcome to join us as we celebrate this milestone.

Habitat Whirlpool
The family and Whirlpool employees a few years ago when Habitat built in Clyde. Whirlpool has always been a great supporter nationally and locally. Nationally, they provide a refrigerator and range for every Habitat home and locally have provided funding and volunteers on many of our projects. They also sponsor an annual Golf outing for the benefit of Sandusky County United Way and Sandusky County Habitat.
