The Ohio Organization of Nurse Executives (OONE) awarded Kayla Pfeiffer, of Fisher-Titus Medical Center, its 2018 Nursing Innovation Award during the organization’s annual conference held recently in Columbus.
Pfeiffer was recognized for leading an interdisciplinary hospital team in developing a standardized process and forms for nurses and respiratory therapists to use during code blue alerts, according to Katie Chieda, chief nursing officer at Fisher-Titus, who sponsored the project.
A code blue is an emergency situation involving a patient in cardiopulmonary arrest that requires a specialized team of clinicians to rush to the patient’s specific location and begin immediate resuscitative efforts.
“Teamwork, competence, confidence, technology and tools are essentially needed during life changing moments in health care,” said Pfeiffer. “When someone’s heart stops or they stop breathing, all pieces need to fall together. This comes with having a team who is compassionate, skilled, practice together and are driven to help the person in need.”
The new Code Blue Nursing & Pulmonary Documentation Interactive Forms developed by the project group are built directly into the hospital’s electronic medical record. This provides cold-blue response teams with standardized tools that allow them to focus on lifesaving processes, while capturing all of the medical and legal documentation required when treating patients, explained Pfeiffer.
Pfeiffer began her career at Fisher-Titus in 2012 as a staff nurse, advanced to a charge nurse role and then nurse educator in 2015. She was recently promoted to organizational development manager overseeing clinical training and development.
OONE is a state organization of nurse leaders serving as the catalyst for innovative health care in Ohio and the nation. OONE members improve health care through education, technology, research, consulting, networking and information sharing.
