Bay Point Resort & Marina honored by Ohio Clean Marinas program
Submitted by BAY POINT RESORT & MARINA
The Ohio Clean Marinas program honored Bay Point Resort & Marina with the program’s first Platinum Clean Marina designation on Friday, June 29, at Bay Point Resort.
The Ohio Clean Marinas Program is a voluntary certification program which recognizes marinas that choose to implement conservation practices known to improve the environmental and economic aspects of their operations. Some of the added measures include the incorporation of pollinator programs and monofilament fishing line recycling bins, as well as planting native species. Additionally, the initiative offers boating education programs such as how to prevent the transport of aquatic invasive species to other bodies of water.
Within the past several years, marina owners and operators have requested the Ohio Clean Marinas Program implement a site-specific certification structure that would fit the needs of various operational activities at marinas throughout the state.
Last summer Clean Marinas staff gathered input from state agencies, topic experts and marinas to formulate new criteria tailored toward each marina. They then piloted these criteria at five marinas across the state for further industry participation. The feedback was very positive. Ohio marinas are now eligible for Base, Gold or Platinum certification, and the Clean Marinas staff were very excited to offer site-specific requirements and new criteria for those wishing to do more at their marinas.
Bay Point was the first to achieve the program’s certification standards, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Ohio Sea Grant.
“We feel very honored to be the first platinum Clean Marina for the State of Ohio” said John Paul Dress, Bay Point’s General Manager. “Our management team has been working very hard the past couple of years getting us to this designation.”
The Ohio Clean Marinas Program is sponsored in partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio State University Extension, Lake Eire Marine Trades Association and Ohio Sea Grant College Program.
